âLuxury now isnât about just an income, itâs about quality customer service and canât-buy experiences.â
BK: One of the most topical businesses today is Apple. Theyâve grown to sixty-five thousand employees and they seem to be delivering a level of caring as well as a product that is extraordinary for the size and scale of what they do.Whatâs interesting though is the comment that Johnny Ive, the chief designer, made on the death of Steve Jobs â about his sense of caring. Is this true in your experience? What I am finding is that the most frustrated business owners are the ones who really do care the most.
CD: Yes. I really, really care. I get upset, I get emotional. I get all of those things.Itâs not, as I read in the press, âCollette is very difficult to work withâ or âshe is a control freakâ. As a customer, would you want me to be on some island having a pina colada in a hammock while a team of people run around and I donât touch the product? Would you want me to not be emotional about something that is not done properly? I really care and when weâve got an idea and one person lets the team down and canât be wrong, it is so difficult. We all care, and the people that care are passionate and they show it. It is a creative business. I canât say Iâm proud of it but I do get upset sometimes. I get annoyed with myself and wonder why I canât remove myself and be objective about the situation?I understand weâll never be 100%, but I donât strive for 90%, I strive for 100% on everything.
BK: But ultimately, these things go out with your name on them. The product is more than just a product, isnât it?
CD: It is. I care and I would not send it out the door if I thought it was inferior. So, just because it has got my name on it, it is not even an option. If I donât think it is right, it wonât go.
